Islamist Blow-Back

"Many were shocked that the apparent executioner in videos made by the Islamic State, or ISIS, was an educated, middle class metropolitan. In fact, academic institutions in Britain have been infiltrated for years by dangerous theocratic fantasists. I should know: I was one of them."
"Last week, the man called "Jihadi John" by the world's media was unmasked as Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born Muslim and naturalized British citizen from London. Not only that, but the Islamic State's most notorious Western recruit was identified as a graduate in computer science from the University of Westminster."
"The desire to impose any religion on society is an inherently repugnant idea, but it is not so among many British Muslims. For decades, we've allowed Islamist ideologues to work unfettered across our communities, to the extent that Islamism has become the default form of political expression for many young Muslims in Britain and across Europe."
Maajid Nawaz, chairman, Quilliam think-tank, author, Radical: My Journey Out of Islamist Extremism

The black-clad man in still image taken from an ISIS video has been identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwait-born, London-raised computer graduate in his mid-20s.

Mr. Nawaz writes of the very well-known fact that the University of Westminster has become a hotbed of extremist activity. The radical Islamist group Hizbut-Tahrir controls the university's Islamic Society, giving a regular platform to those who preach hatred of the West. A man accused of espousing homophobia, who advocates for female genital mutilation and slanders Jews as descended from apes and pigs was to have spoken at the university the day it was revealed that Jihadi John was Londoner Mohammed Emwazi, educated at University of Westminster.

Recruiters, pointed out Mr. Nawaz, manipulate world events in support of expressing the "Islamist narrative" claiming that the world is at war with Islam. Only a caliphate is capable of protecting Muslims from the infidels and crusaders, they preach convincingly to the naive or those attracted to the romance of jihad. Claims that seduce young Muslims to the ideology of a subculture that infiltrates universities throughout Britain. Mr. Nawaz describes his own seduction to jihad and the part he played in recruiting other students to the cause.

He was posted at Newham College, where a colleague in jihad stabbed a non-Muslim student along with cries of "Allahu akbar!", which led to his own expulsion, the murderer himself convicted of his crime. From there Mr. Nawaz travelled to Pakistan and Egypt perfecting his jihadi recruitment techniques until a stint in prison in Egypt caused him to see the light of reason through introspection and the realization that Islamism was not for him, turning him instead toward human rights and the counter-extremism he now engages in.

"The recent discovery of [a] terrorist plot to do a mass terror attack on a Via Rail passenger train out of Toronto by two Islamists, and their intent interdicted by joint Canadian and U.S. security agencies, eerily followed the hunt and capture of the two Chechen brothers — Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — involved in carrying out the Boston bombing."
"The arrests of Chiheb Esseghaier, a 30-year old Tunisian studying in Montreal, and Raed Jaser, a 35-year old Palestinian landed immigrant resident in Toronto, for plotting the terror attacks on Via Rail, were preceded by reports of two Canadians (Ali Medlej and Xristos Katsiroubas, a Muslim convert) involved in the terrorist attacks on an Algerian gas plant deep inside the Sahara desert on the Algeria-Libya border. The two were killed by security forces, while a third Canadian (Aaron Yoon, a Muslim convert) is being held in a Mauritanian prison as a suspected terrorist."
"There was also report of a recent suicide bombing carried out in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, in which a Canadian (Mahad Ali Dhore) of Somali origin, and a former student at York University in Toronto, was identified as one of the suicide bombers."
