Screen Shot 2015-09-01 at 2.12.08 PMGENEVA, September 3, 2015 - UN Watch submitted a report today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon documenting 12 different Facebook accounts operated by supposedly neutral UNRWA officials that openly incite to violence and hatred against Jews, urging him and agency chief Pierre Krähenbühl to fire the culprits pursuant to their promises.
UN Watch additionally called on those giving hundreds of millions of dollars every year to UNRWA -- including the United States ($408 million), the European Union ($139 million), the United Kingdom ($95 million) -- to stop UNRWA from using taxpayer funds to employ school principals and teachers who spread anti-Semitism and terrorism. Inaction is complicity.
The pathology of racism and violence within UNRWA must finally be rooted out, and not denied and buried, as UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness has repeatedly attempted to do.

Chris Gunness Attacks UN Watch
UN Watch's campaign has brought to light numerous instances of UNRWA incitement on Facebook, reported in the Jerusalem Post, i24 News, Algemeiner, and The Blaze.
However, top UNRWA official Chris Gunness is responding not by condemning or trying to stop his teachers' incitement to racism and violence, but rather by launching a campaign of intimidation against UN Watch.
Just as he last year reacted with a Twitter emotional meltdown when he screamed for a boycott of the Jerusalem Post over a critical op-ed, this time Gunness is attacking UN Watch for daring to report his organization's incidents of hate.
UN Watch is urging donor states to finally hold Mr. Gunness accountable for his reckless, inflammatory and unprofessional conduct.

In his tone and approach of reacting to UN Watch's legitimate reporting on abuses, Gunness now joins the ranks of ex-UN official Richard Falk and Cuba's Castro regime, both of whom sought to shut down UN Watch in the past.
UN Watch has nothing to hide. Gunness' McCarthyite attacks are designed to intimidate us, and others, into silence.
But UN Watch refuses to be intimidated. On the contrary: we will now redouble our work to expose the despicable racism promoted by UNRWA officials in violation of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

With EU Support, UN Casts Israel as Worst Violator of Economic and Social Rights

With EU Support, UN Casts Israel as Worst Violator of Economic and Social Rights

Screen Shot 2015-07-22 at 2.14.00 AMGENEVA, July 22 – The UN’s 54-nation Economic and Social Council singled out Israel as the only violator of economic and social rights in the world, by a resolution adopted on Monday by a majority of 42 states including all EU members.

Only Australia and the U.S. opposed, with abstentions by Honduras and Panama. Eight countries were absent.
ECOSOC condemned Israel
The text excoriates Israel for such crimes as “destruction of homes and properties, economic institutions and agricultural lands and orchards in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as well as in the occupied Syrian Golan”; of the “exploitation of natural resources”; and of “the dumping of all kinds of waste materials in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan, which gravely threaten their natural resources.”
The EU-backed resolution mentions Hamas 0 times.

Syria was mentioned 13 times — but only to condemn Israel for alleged violations against “the Syrian citizens of the occupied Syrian Golan” whose family members reside in “their mother homeland, the Syrian Arab Republic.” The murderous regime of Bashar al-Assad is not condemned or even mentioned once.

No other country is singled out for condemnation at this year’s ECOSOC’s annual session.
After the introduction of the resolution by South Africa, the Syrian Ambassador took the floor and accused Israel of facilitating terrorist attacks against Syrian cities and civilians. Assad’s envoy condemned the Jewish state for “destroying the soil of the Golan, exploiting its resources, burning its products and other racist policies.”

UN Watch BriefingLatest from the United Nations  Vol. 540 |  June 25, 2015
UN Debate on Gaza Report: UN Watch to Lead Response
Prominent Officers, Experts, Heading to Geneva for Monday Session of UNHRC

LIVE WEBCAST: MONDAY, JUNE 29, FROM 11:15 AM EST TO 1:00 PMwww.unwatch.org/gazaresponse
HEADING TO GENEVA: Maj-Gen. Michael Jones, Lieutnant-Colonel Geoffrey S. Corn, Col. Richard Kemp
GENEVA, June 25, 2015 - UN Watch will be leading an international response to the UN's new Gaza report in the plenary of the Human Rights Council, at a debate on Monday under the 47-nation body's permanent agenda item targeting Israel.
The campaign to tell the truth about the war launched last summer by Hamas will include appearances by prominent American, British and European political and military figures at the UNHRC plenary, a press conference, and a panel event for diplomats and human rights activists. Speeches will be posted on our channel at YouTube.com/unwatch.
• Senior military experts will present the findings of two fact-finding missions -- the report of the JINSA Task Force on the Gaza Conflict by five U.S. generals, and the preliminary findings of the high-level international group of 11 military and political figures -- both of which contrast sharply with the UN report. Watch their event on live webcast at www.unwatch.org/gazaresponse on Monday, June 29th, at 5:15 pm Geneva time (11:15 am EST to 1:00 pm EST).
• A major new book by UN Watch and NGO Monitor, Filling in the Blanks: Documenting Missing Dimensions in UN and NGO Investigations of the Gaza Conflict, will be released at the side event.
• Expert speakers will additionally include Dr. Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, who will analyze the funders of Hamas; and NGO Monitor president Prof. Gerald Steinberg and Legal Advisor Anne Herzberg, who will address distortions of the report, and the problematic role played by groups like Human Rights Watch, whose director Ken Roth actively supported Hamas during the war. (See below his infamous "International Humanitarian Law allows" tweet from August 19th, in defense of Hamas terror tunnels.)

The report of the UN inquiry -- headed for six months by William Schabas until he was forced to resign over his undisclosed paid legal work for the PLO, and then by Mary McGowan Davis, who in 2010 served on a similar committee to implement the notorious Goldstone Report -- repeatedly equates Israel with Hamas, and insinuates that Israel's "political and military leaders" are guilty of war crimes.
The UN report concludes with a thinly-veiled call for members of Israel's "political and military establishment, including at the senior level" to be investigated by the International Criminal Court; prosecuted by individual countries that embrace universal jurisdiction; and for other countries to "comply with extradition requests" pertaining to "suspects of such crimes" to be sent to countries where they would "face a fair trial."
For analysis of the UN report:
• One of the most detailed and damning comes from The Lawfare Blog, affiliated with the Brookings Institution. Brookings senior fellow Benjamin Wittes and Lawfare associate editor Yishai Schwartz are clear: “The UN Human Rights Council’s Independent Commission of Inquiry report on the 2014 Gaza war, released Monday, is a bad piece of work—bad in almost entirely predictable and boring ways, but no less bad for being bad and predictable."
• Col. Richard Kemp, the former commander of British forces in Afghanistan, who will be part of the UN Watch delegation, published a brilliant op-ed in today's New York Times -- see below.

The U.N.’s Gaza Report Is Flawed and Dangerous
By RICHARD KEMP     JUNE 25, 2015
LONDON — As a British officer who had more than his share of fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Balkans, it pains me greatly to see words and actions from the United Nations that can only provoke further violence and loss of life. The United Nations Human Rights Council report on last summer’s conflict in Gaza, prepared by Judge Mary McGowan Davis, and published on Monday, will do just that.

The report starts by attributing responsibility for the conflict to Israel’s “protracted occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip,” as well as the blockade of Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza 10 years ago. In 2007 it imposed a selective blockade only in response to attacks by Hamas and the import of munitions and military matériel from Iran. The conflict last summer, which began with a dramatic escalation in rocket attacks targeting Israeli civilians, was a continuation of Hamas’s war of aggression.

In an unusual concession, the report suggests that Hamas may have been guilty of war crimes, but it still legitimizes Hamas’s rocket and tunnel attacks and even sympathizes with the geographical challenges in launching rockets at Israeli civilians: “Gaza’s small size and its population density make it particularly difficult for armed groups always to comply” with the requirement not to launch attacks from civilian areas.

There is no such sympathy for Israel. Judge Davis accuses the Israel Defense Forces of “serious violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.” Yet no evidence is put forward to substantiate these accusations. It is as though the drafters of the report believe that any civilian death in war must be illegal.

Referring to cases in which Israeli attacks killed civilians in residential areas, Judge Davis says that in the absence of contrary information available to her commission, there are strong indications that the attacks were disproportionate, and therefore war crimes. But all we get is speculation and the presumption of guilt.

The report is characterized by a lack of understanding of warfare. That is hardly surprising. Judge Davis admitted, when I testified before her in February, that the commission, though investigating a war, had no military expertise. Perhaps that is why no attempt has been made to judge Israeli military operations against the practices of other armies. Without such international benchmarks, the report’s findings are meaningless.

The commission could have listened to Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said last November that the I.D.F. had taken extraordinary measures to try to limit civilian casualties. Or to a group of 11 senior military officers from seven nations, including the United States, Germany, Spain and Australia, who also investigated the Gaza conflict recently. I was a member of that group, and our report, made available to Judge Davis, said: “None of us is aware of any army that takes such extensive measures as did the I.D.F. last summer to protect the lives of the civilian population.”

The report acknowledges that Israel took steps to warn of imminent attacks but suggests more should have been done to minimize civilian casualties. Yet it offers no opinion about what additional measures Israel could have taken. It even criticizes Israel for using harmless explosive devices — the “knock on the roof” — as a final warning to evacuate targeted buildings, suggesting that it created confusion. No other country uses roof-knocks, a munition developed by Israel as part of a series of I.D.F. warning procedures, including text messages, phone calls and leaflet drops, that are known to have saved many Palestinian lives.

Judge Davis suggests that the I.D.F.’s use of air, tank and artillery fire in populated areas may constitute a war crime and recommends further international legal restrictions on their use. Yet these same systems were used extensively by American and British forces in similar circumstances in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are often vital in saving the lives of our own soldiers, and their curtailment would jeopardize military effectiveness while handing an advantage to our enemies.

The I.D.F. is not perfect. In the heat of battle and under stress its commanders and soldiers undoubtedly made mistakes. Weapons malfunctioned, intelligence was sometimes wrong and, as with all armies, it has some bad soldiers. Unnecessary deaths resulted, and these should be investigated and the individuals brought to trial if criminal culpability is suspected.

The reason so many civilians died in Gaza last summer was not Israeli tactics or policy. It was Hamas’s strategy. Hamas deliberately positioned its fighters and munitions in civilian areas, knowing that Israel would have no choice but to attack them and that civilian casualties would result. Unable to inflict existential harm on Israel by military means, Hamas sought to cause large numbers of casualties among its own people in order to bring international condemnation and unbearable diplomatic pressure against Israel.

Judge Davis’s report is rife with contradictions. She acknowledges that Israeli military precautions saved lives, yet without foundation accuses “decision makers at the highest levels of the government of Israel” of a policy of deliberately killing civilians. Incredibly, she “regrets” that her commission was unable to verify the use of civilian buildings by “Palestinian armed groups,” yet elsewhere acknowledges Hamas’s widespread use of protected locations, including United Nations schools.

Most worrying, Judge Davis claims to be “fully aware of the need for Israel to address its security concerns” while demanding that it “lift, immediately and unconditionally, the blockade on Gaza.” Along with the report’s endorsement of Hamas’s anti-Israel narrative, this dangerous recommendation would undoubtedly lead to further bloodshed in both Israel and Gaza.

UN Watch BriefingLatest from the United Nations  Vol. 520  |  December 24, 2014
The following op-ed appears in this week's edition of The Jewish Chronicle of London.
Geneva Convention: another global forum for Israel-bashing
By Hillel Neuer

After the Holocaust, the world met in Geneva to affirm the laws of war. And last week, for only the third time in history, the UK, France, Germany and another 123 signatory states to the Fourth Geneva Convention assembled in order to call out a perpetrator.

And for the third time, the one they condemned was Israel.

Top 10 Biggest UN Watch Moments of 2014
Click here for the most compelling and impactful moments in UN Watch’s battle over the past year against dictatorships and double standards, and in defense of the true principles of human rights.
To their credit, the U.S., Canada and Australia joined Israel in boycotting the conference.

In a ten-point declaration prepared in advance, the attendees “call[ed] on the Occupying Power to fully and effectively respect the Fourth Geneva Convention in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.”

They equally expressed “their deep concern, from an international humanitarian law standpoint, about certain measures taken by the Occupying Power in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the closure of the Gaza Strip.”

Though the text did include several anodyne references to the obligations of “non-state actors,” presumably Hamas, the goal of the Palestinian-initiated gathering and its declaration was to rebuke the Jewish state.

Israel’s actions are not immune from criticism. Yet by portraying the IDF as the worst perpetrator of war crimes on the planet, and the Hamas terrorist group as the victim, Geneva gave the world an inverted, false and dangerous message.

In doing so, the conference undermined the principles of international humanitarian law.

The truth, as former British commander in Afghanistan Col. Richard Kemp stated in 2009, and again this summer, is that no army in the history of warfare has done more to avoid harming civilians in a combat zone than the IDF in Gaza.

That conclusion was echoed by General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff. Speaking recently of this summer’s war, Dempsey said that “Israel went to extraordinary lengths to limit collateral damage and civilian casualties.” In fact, the U.S. sent a special team to learn from these Israeli preventative measures.

All of this was ignored by the conference, which, as with its similar 1999 and 2001 gatherings against Israel, tainted the Geneva Conventions with politicization.

Consider the double standards. Despite their gross and systematic war crimes, the regimes of Bashar al-Assad, Saddam Hussein and Muammar Qaddafi were never called out by the High Contracting Parties.
Nothing ever on Sudan, Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas or the PA, whose President Abbas incited to the recent terror attacks in Jerusalem.
And nothing on this year’s Russian invasions of Crimea and Ukraine, which have killed thousands, or Pakistan’s displacement of one million people in an ongoing anti-Taliban operation. Only Israel.

When the Swiss solicited support for the conference, the EU should have said no.
At a time when Islamic extremists worldwide are, with singular barbarism, targeting civilians—kidnapping, beheading and shooting men, women and children from Nigeria to Iraq to Pakistan—it is telling that London, Paris and Berlin chose to go along with singling out the Jewish state.

Scapegoating the Jews is always easy. For decades Middle East despots profitably diverted attention from the pathologies and suffering of their societies. But that did not make them go away. They festered.
In the failed cities of Cairo and Tripoli, in the wasteland of death of Syria and Iraq, we see the results.

GENEVA, May 8, 2014 — The U.N. Human Rights Council appointed Hilal Elver, the Turkish wife of Richard Falk, to become its Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food. Together with her husband and co-author, Elver is explicitly acknowledged in the world’s leading 9/11 conspiracy book, “The New Pearl Harbor,” for the help she provided the author, David Ray Griffin. Elver’s own academic work cites to Griffin’s conspiracy book, which argues that the U.S. government helped orchestrate the attacks on the World Trade Center to justify wars against Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan. In a 2012 law journal article, Elver explicitly cited to Griffin’s notorious conspiracy tract. She compared 9/11 to Pearl Harbor, saying that both incidents “gave permission to the government to unleash the war power,” “invade countries”, “create new hegemonies”, and “racially discriminate against and segregate the people inside the United States.”

Ex-UN investigator Richard Falk and his wife attack UN Watch

UN Watch BriefingLatest from the United Nations  Vol. 516  |  December 8, 2014
Ex-UN investigator Richard Falk and his wife attack UN Watch
Falk: "I have been the continuous target of a sustained defamation campaign spearheaded by the Zionist UN Watch.... On at least one occasion I was informed that a previous offer of a visiting appointment at an overseas university, Kings College London, was reduced from year-to-year to a single year due to my alleged anti-Semitism"

Richard-Falk
Richard Falk and his wife, new UN special rapporteur on the right to food Hilal Elver Falk

GENEVA, Dec. 8 - For the third time in three months, former UN official Richard Falk has lashed out at UN Watch, this time in an interview that purports to be in the voice of his wife, new UN expert on hunger Hilal Elver Falk, but which appears to have been written by him.

Asked by the interviewer from the Moon Magazine why the U.S. condemned her appointment, Elver, who has famously accused Israel of "water apartheid", misleadingly answered by insisting that the U.S. did not vote against her appointment, which is true -- largely because the appointment of numerous experts was a package deal -- but non-responsive to the question asked.

Elver claims that "the U.S. government did not oppose my appointment." In fact, the U.S. strongly condemned her appointment, following a UN Watch letter to Ambassador Samantha Power documenting Elver's utter failure to meet the basic requirements of the position. The U.S. slammed Falk's wife for her “lack of relevant experience,” questioned “her readiness for this assignment,” and pointed to her “biased and inflammatory views” which “run counter to the dispassionate professionalism central to the work of a Special Rapporteur.” Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird sent a letter to the UN condemning Elver’s “abysmal judgment.”

Elver omitted all of this, and instead accused UN Watch of mounting a "politically motivated publicity campaign" against her.
"A small Geneva NGO called UN Watch came out against my appointment, not because of my qualifications, but because I am married to Richard Falk, said Elver. "This NGO consistently and irresponsibly accused my husband of being anti-Semitic, and I was presumed guilty merely as a result of being his wife. I was also falsely alleged to be collaborating with his writings on the Palestine-Israel conflict."

The truth is that Elver's original application form was riddled with self-disqualifying answers, non-sequiturs, and spelling mistakes. Her English, as one can also see on YouTube, is very poor and at times incoherent. Curiously, however, while the interviewer claims to have "talked" to Elver, her English is flawless, and also includes all of her husband's usual manipulative arguments.

Falk: 'I Lost Academic Appointment Because of UN Watch"
Richard Falk, the infamous 9/11 Truther and author of the New York Times 1979 op-ed “Trusting Khomeini,” has not received a moment of UN Watch attention once his 6-year term as the UNHRC’s special investigator of “Israel’s violations of the bases and principles of international law” expired, at long last, in June of this year.
Yet Falk continues to evince a profound bitterness to UN Watch, the only human rights group at the United Nations that dared to expose his toxic mix of pro-Hamas appeasement, anti-Western invective, support for 9/11 conspiracy theorists and demonization of Israel.

Asked in an October interview about obstacles to his UN work, Falk said: "I was very much attacked in a kind of defamatory way by UN Watch and other very extreme Zionist organizations, which tried -- wherever I went, anywhere in the world, they would try to prevent me from speaking and mounted a kind of defamatory campaign, called me an anti-Semite, a leading anti-Semite."

In truth, UN Watch allies in condemning Falk’s poison included UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the U.S., the UK, Canada — and the Palestinian Authority, which famously tried to fire him. For a glimpse into Falk’s numerous statements supporting terrorism against America, the West and Israel, click here.

Here is Falk’s tirade against UN Watch, from his September essay on the alleged misuses of anti-Semitism:
I do not claim neutrality on these issues. During the past six years, while serving as UN Special Rapporteur for Occupied Palestine on behalf of the Human Rights Council, I have been the continuous target of a sustained defamation campaign spearheaded by a Zionist-oriented NGO, UN Watch, based in Geneva. I was repeatedly accused of anti-Semitism, and my views on other issues were likewise distorted to create an impression of bizarre judgment. I was called a supporter of terrorism, a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, and the like…
Because of the atmosphere in North America where demonstrating 100%+ support for Israel has become an indispensable ingredient of political credibility, these defamatory attacks were accepted as valid by several public officials who never bothered to check with me or examine my actual views on such controversial topics.
As a result I was attacked by such luminaries as the UN Secretary General, two U.S. ambassadors to the UN (Susan Rice, Samantha Powers), Foreign Minister of Canada, among others, and a favorite target for Fox TV and the Murdock [sic] media empire.
Additionally, efforts were made to have my lectures cancelled at universities in various places around the world (including McGill and McMaster in Canada, AUB in Beirut, ANU, Melbourne, and Sydney in Australia, Norfolk in the UK, and Princeton, University of Texas, University of Iowa and others in the USA) These universities were warned that unless my campus appearance was cancelled, funding would suffer.
On at least one occasion I was informed that a previous offer of a visiting appointment at an overseas university, Kings College London, was reduced from year-to-year to a single year due to my alleged anti-Semitism.
Even my wife was defamed by such Zionist zealots who tried to defeat her candidacy in the UN Human Rights Council in 2014 to become Special Rapporteur for the Right to Food. She was accused of writing inflammatory anti-Israeli tracts in collaboration with me, a complete lie as we had never collaborated on this subject-matter, and it was further alleged that she shared my anti-Semitic views, which is a double lie.

Iranian victims react to UN's review of Tehran's human rights record
Iranian victims and activists who attended today's UN review of Iran in Geneva today reacted sharply to the presentation of chief Iranian delegate Mohammad Larijani, who blamed the West and its "media blitz" for Iran's execution on Saturday of 26-year-old Reyhaneh Jabbari, and insisted she had a fair trial.
Iran was praised glowingly by many delegations, including from Syria, Yemen, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Belarus, Vietnam, and Palestine. Click here for quotes.
REACTIONS

> Selected quotes below

"I was Reyhaneh Jabbari's lawyer. Mr. Larijani's statement is completely false. It is not true that she had a fair trial. Because the deceased in this case belonged to the intelligence services, the court treated the case differently, and gave undue weight to the prosecution. Key evidence in the case, and basic legal principles, were ignored."
                         — Mohammad Mostafaei, Iranian human rights lawyer who was forced to flee the country after being persecuted by the authorities for his defense of individuals facing the death penalty. Mr. Mostafei was the first lawyer of Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26-year-old woman who was just executed by Iran on Saturday for allegedly killing the man who was trying to rape her. Mr. Mostafaei is the founder and director of Norway's Universal Tolerance Organization. In 2011, he was awarded PEN's Ossietzky Prize.

"Listening to Iran's delegates today, I felt they were competing with themselves as to who would tell the biggest lie. Seeing the Iranian representatives, I felt like I did at my own trial, when they said you have to thank God a million times this is not the 1980s, or you would have been executed. When I was in prison they always said to me, whoever stands up against the 12th imam will be put up against the wall and shot. What these representatives are saying is to justify that mentality."
—Sepideh Pooraghaiee,Iranian journalist and human rights activist who was jailed for 110 days in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison. Ms.  Pooraghaiee recently fled Iran, finding asylum in France, after she was threatened by the government for reporting on its crackdown against peaceful protesters. "I was in danger because I know the truth," she says. "And it was bad for them."

"Iran's statements sound like a work of fiction. When Iran says there is no torture in the country, as I was sitting in the room, it was as though I did not exist."
— Marina Nemat, Iranian dissident, former prisoner of conscience and best-selling author, now living in Canada, who was jailed as a political prisoner in Tehran when she was only 16 years old. During her incarceration for two years in the infamous Evin Prison, she was interrogated, tortured, faced execution, and was raped by a prison guard who she was coerced to marry.

GENEVA,  Oct. 28, 2014 - One day before Iran goes before a United Nations examination of its human rights record, the non-governmental organization UN Watch will convene an international forum of Iranian victims, activists and experts this Thursday, October 30th, to expose gross and systematic violations that are covered up in the regime's written submission to the UN review session. (See excerpts below.)
The UN Watch parallel event, to take place inside the UN's European headquarters at the Palais de Nations in Geneva, will feature leading figures on the subject of human rights in Iran:
Mohammad Mostafaei - Iranian human rights lawyer who was forced to flee the country after being persecuted by the authorities for his defense of individuals facing the death penalty.
Sepideh Pooraghaiee - Iranian journalist and human rights activist who was jailed for 110 days in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison. Ms.  Pooraghaiee recently fled Iran, finding asylum in France, after she was threatened by the government for reporting on its crackdown against peaceful protesters. "I was in danger because I know the truth," she says. "And it was bad for them."
Marina Nemat - Iranian dissident, former prisoner of conscience and best-selling author, now living in Canada, who was jailed as a political prisoner in Tehran when she was only 16 years old. During her incarceration for two years in the infamous Evin Prison, she was interrogated, tortured, faced execution, and was raped by a prison guard who she was coerced to marry. Ms. Nemat was the recipient of the European Parliament’s inaugural Human Dignity Prize in 2007, and in 2014 was awarded UN Watch's Morris B. Abram Human Rights Award.
Sohrab Ahmari - London-based editorial page writer for the Wall Street Journal. Born in Tehran, Mr. Ahmari was interrogated by Iranian security officials as a child when he accidentally brought a Star Wars video cassette to school. He holds a law degree from Northeastern University and previously served as a nonresident fellow at the Henry Jackson Society. An alumnus of Teach for America, Mr. Ahmari is co-editor of "Arab Spring Dreams," an anthology of essays by young dissidents in the Middle East (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).
