"God's Will"
"It's the ultimate sacrifice you can make for your religion. Basically it's God's will."
"Here everything is anti-prayer, anti-Islam ... even if it's a tyrannical place [Somalia], it's better than Canada. I want to live in a place that's better than this ... because you can live in a place where there's Islamic law."
"...All non-Muslims hate Islam ... talking to a non-Muslim about morality and s---, they don't even know what morality is, Christians."
"The government is very evil, what they're doing to average Muslims."
Mohamed Hersi, 28, Somali-Canadian citizen
Peter J. Thompson / National Post Mohamed Hersi leaves the Brampton Superior Court on April 29, 2011
"He believed it was the duty of every Muslim", the undercover officer who had befriended Mohamed Hersi testified at the trial of the man arrested at Toronto's Pearson airport while attempting to board a flight to London, then on to Cairo. Here is the perfect subject whose concerns and actions represent the radicalized Canadian Muslim, born in Canada, educated in Canada, presumably accepting Canadian values, but who chooses to answer to violent jihad.
The prevailing opinion seems to be that some agents working stealthily within Muslim communities persuade young Muslim men that they will find direction and satisfaction in their lives by surrendering to the responsibility they have as pious Muslims to engage in jihad, as commanded by the Koran. Those who do not succumb to the argument are obviously not true Muslims. It helps to instil the resentment that accompanies victimhood.
The undercover officer who met Mohamed Hersi 'by chance', admitted to him on being prodded by Mr. Hersi, that he too was interested in travelling to Somalia, to join Al-Shabab, to bring true Islamic tradition back to where it belongs, in a sharia-respecting community that had been overtaken by false Muslims forcing their secular 'democratic' values on traditional Muslim societies.
Mohamed Hersi informed his friend, the undercover officer, that the devil was trying to convince him to betray Islam when he expressed doubts about joining Al-Shabab, after all. "He puts those voices in your head", responded Hersi to the presumably, doubting agent. "Don't be scared", he comforted him. He was himself anxious to leave Canada, which was "like a police state", to make his way to Somalia to fight against pro-government forces.
"Brothers" at Toronto's Salahedin mosque, he complained bitterly, were arrested on security certificates. No one cared because only Muslims were affected. How, asked the undercover agent, did he know all of this? "My imam talks about it", was the response. "It's pretty tyrannical." Police entered peoples' homes to plant listening devices and cameras.
Mohamed Hersi, who grew up in Toronto, came to the attention of police in 2010 when a dry cleaning business discovered a USB device in a bag of clothing. The jump drive was turned over to Toronto police. On examination it was discovered to contain a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook, a Canadian Forces Department of National Defence Operational Manual, and reports from Intercon Security, where Mr. Hersi worked.
In the following months the undercover officer became known to Mr. Hersi. When he was arrested at the airport, Mr. Hersi carried his Canadian passport, $6,000 in cash and another 1,100 euros, along with a "black spy pen". Police discovered The Anarchist Cookbook and the "U.S. Navy SEAL sniper training syllabus" on his laptop.
So there are the clues. Induction into jihad comes as readily as studying the Koran which instructs the faithful to its duty to jihad. Imams can be very helpful in injecting resentment and inducements to resist the efforts of the evil West to dishonour Islam and harass innocent Muslims. It is the duty of all those of faith to respond to the absolute requirement to install sharia law and resist the evils of the West.
And Mohamed Hersi was right after all. Canada is a place of repression, which seeks to strangle free speech and the free will to make decisions affecting one's future. Where religion is seen with suspicion, rather than honoured, and Muslims like him are arrested, charged with unsubstantiated crimes of nebulous value, and held to be guilty of criminal offences, when they are merely discharging their duties to Islam.
