Heads Are Rolling: Operation Yewtree
"Officers working on Operation Yewtree have arrested a man in his 60s in connection with the investigation. The man was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences, and has been taken into custody. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed 'Savile and others'." Scotland Yard spokesmanBut isn't it a misfortune, a miscarriage of time and justice - that the one man who led the disgrace of Britain in its celebration of a man who distinguished himself as a popular star, a BBC personality of huge note and respect, who died at a grand old age with reputation intact - his secret life to be aired before an unbelieving public as a post mortem of his career.
The really shocking part of all of this is that the jovial celebrity's secret life pursuing children for sex, was not really that much of a secret. It was kept from the public, certainly, but those who worked alongside him, those who were exposed to him as people of authority, knew of his puerile and disgusting attraction to children and his fondness for fondling them.
They simply found it more useful to be oblivious to his unfortunate activities, lest they cook the goose that laid such golden eggs.
He was a magnificent fund-raiser, a man whose work on behalf of raising charitable funds to enable a children's hospital to broaden its outreach funding new infrastructure, hospital wings, modern technology, was a marvel. He was credited with raising untold millions on behalf of children's medical-surgical procedures.
How can one blacken the name of such a gifted individual whom everyone admired for his dedication to charity?
Of course the fact that children - and most often children who were doubly vulnerable because of their medical condition, along with the fact that they were children in trusting need were sacrificed without hesitation by BBC executives, by hospital administrators, doctors, nursing staff, who saw fit to jolly him along with the notion that the children would 'get over' their experiences with him, is rather unforgivable.
That, and the fact that he became an enabler for other pedophiles. People like himself who were morbidly attracted to their sexual predations on children, people who like him, were famous, celebrated for their artistic talent, for their influence in the public imagination. That cabal of the artistically celebrated, those with a special niche in the entertainment field, who also happened to be child predators, left behind them an eddying wake of disturbed children.
Who now, as adults, have finally found the courage to come forward in their hundreds to inform authorities that they too were victims of the now-infamous Jimmy Savile. And another personage has been lassoed into the gathering of those upon whom suspicion has fallen - as adults, once abused children, bring their charges to police. Entertainers and friends and colleaguesint-pedophilia like Gary Glitter.
Metropolitan Police spoke obliquely of their leads, making it clear that they will be investigating quite a number of other individuals high on their list, after allegations of startling criminal impropriety were lodged against them. Thirteen and fourteen year old girls raped in Jimmy Savile's BBC Television Centre dressing room; by him and by his friends.
Were Mr. Savile still alive to defend himself he would swear that an awful lot of women are perjuring themselves and he is innocent of all charges.
Just as his friend Gary Glitter, aka Paul Gadd, is now motivated to strongly deny any and all allegations being brought against him. Known as a child pornographer having served time previously for child sex crimes, he was stoutly defended in the past by Mr. Savile. "What's Gary Glitter done wrong? Well nothing really. He's just sat at home watching dodgy films."
This wide-ranging investigation that encompasses a huge geographic area and has swept quite a number of well-known and -regarded figures into awkward prominence has been divided into abuse accusations against Jimmy Savile in particular, and other people along with him, and a third category of people acting alone to derive their gratification, victimizing children.
