The Slimy Snake and the Grinning Crocodile
If slapstick humour with a truly sinister bent is what observers are after, they've no better venue from which to observe it than at the United Nations. Where black is white and wrong is right. Where nations whose exemplary laws and protections of their own and others are held up as outcasts by the far more plentiful nations which excel at fomenting tribulation for their own populations and the world at large.
Where a much-heralded Human Rights Commission, celebrating its mission to advance human rights could be headed by a committee comprised entirely of the most human rights-abusive nations on Earth, posing as arbiters of good fellowship concerned with bringing to account those whom they claim despoil and antagonize, predatorily dominate and coerce.
In the United Nations General Assembly, an international body wholly dedicated to pursuing peace and good governance and protection of people from their errant governments violating their human rights, huge applause is given to the presence of a consummately atrocious tyrant. The Islamic Republic of Iran sends its president to castigate and slander the free nations of the world.
Just as Yasser Arafat, a completely engaged terrorist with a leering veneer of righteousness, stood before the General Assembly as an honoured guest, gun in holster, an imagined dove in hand so too does Mahmoud Ahmadinejad bow to loud applause, a reptilian smirk plastered on his oily face as he blandly speaks of demolishing a member-country.
Canada and Israel had the good sense to absent themselves from the dismal proceedings. Delegates from the United States, France, Germany and Italy joined the 24 other European Union nations in stalking out as Ahmadinejad waxed delusionally eloquent speaking of countries like the United States that "seek their progress, prosperity and dignity through imposing poverty, humiliation and annihilation to others".
Mock theatre at its most insanely absurd. Openly contemptful of reality and truth, conspiratorially delighted with turning fact around to fiction, and offering themselves as the purest, high-minded, democratically-governed that nations could aspire to. Ahmadinejad, without a demurral from the general body spoke of European countries that "still use the Holocaust, after six decades, as the excuse to pay fine or ransom to the Zionists".
When it is that same EU, along with the United States which has footed the bill for the longest-reigning group of specialized-plaintive victims in the world who refused to surrender their refugee status in favour of the status quo which querulously claimed Israel has denied the Palestinians their birthright, and they would deign to live on hand-outs as a form of moral blackmail.
Not to be entirely outdone, up to the podium loomed the august figure of a new Islamist saviour, Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had much to say about his former ally Israel, all of it representing a vomitously-acid spew of slander, certain to win large applause from his Arab/Muslim audience and their hangers-on.
Erdogan spoke movingly of how vitally important it was for the Palestinians to obtain recognition of themselves as a nation deserving of a country of their own. For they have been viciously battling the State of Israel for over sixty years to displace it and reclaim what they believe to be theirs.
Something like the Kurds in Turkey who feel they deserve a homeland and which Erdogan is disposed to deny them, brutally, violently.
Erdogan knows all about 'occupation' and 'occupiers', from first-hand knowledge. Just as he knows about genocide despite denials of Armenian accusations. He knows too about "Those who govern the country take steps every day building new barriers to peace. We don't have a problem with the people of Israel. The source of the current tension is solely the Israeli government."
Which responded to the challenge of the Gaza-blockade-busting armada when Turkish thugs viciously beat Israel naval officers, who responding, resulted in the deaths of 9 Turks. And despite visual, video and anecdotal evidence in proof, and a UN investigative committee exonerating Israel of Turkey's claims, Erdogan insists on an apology and blood money.
Something like the million-dollar 'bail' Iran accepted for the release of two innocent American hikers languishing under false pretense as representing 'spies', in Iran's prisons.
Erdogan now characterizes Israel as a threat to peace, but it is Erdogan who is threatening Greece and Cyprus and Israel in the Mediterranean with military might. Irritating details that reflect reality, but the United Nations reflects a fun-house gallery of torqued mirrors
