A community has been impacted by criminal violence. Among them in that community live those who are addicted to drugs and guns and gangs and violence. From among that demographic emanates episodes of criminal activity reflecting a common thread; they arise from Muslim backgrounds. Which naturally would lead anyone to ponder; what is it about their backgrounds that propels these young people into criminality and violence?

Whey do they prey on one another? What motivates them? Are their genes so drenched in tribal vengeance that these younger generations cannot shed that anti-civilizational propensity?

In the latest news after a gunman opened fire in a neighbourhood restaurant popular among Muslim youth where one young man was shot dead, another shot repeatedly, but he will recover, police asked for cooperation from the community and from witnesses to enable them to identify those involved. Some cooperation was forthcoming, but it is more likely that from previous assaults and arrests police had enough of a file on suspects to lead them to the conclusion that they knew who was involved.

And with that knowledge a further caution arose; to remove those suspects from the freedom to continue pursuing their agenda of murder and mayhem.  To that end, after the murder of Marwan Arab and the wounding of his cousin Ayyub Arab, seven arrests were made by the Ottawa Police Services. A search warrant at a west-end home revealed a 12-gauge shotgun. Now, Bahzad Behruzi, 29, with the two Arab men at the Shifa Restaurant the night of the shooting, has been taken into custody, believed to have been the target of the gunshots that killed one acquaintance and wounded the other.

Also arrested were friends of Marwan, Mohamed Hamad Mohamed, 26, and Abad Abdi Shire, 21. Charged with a selection of charges as enumerated above. Anti-gang police know Behruzi quite well. National anti-terror police had ordered Ayyub Arab, associated with the Algonquin College Muslim Students' Association, to disengage from all further contact with terrorist recruiter and financier Awso Peshdary. Police acted out of concern that retribution for the murder at the Shifa restaurant would be undertaken.

The arrests will defuse that situation, however temporarily. But the names of readily identifiable Arab or Muslim residents of the city will continue to crop up in the news wildly disproportionately to their numbers in society. And the search for the perpetrator of the gunfire continues. The question remains: why are these young people so immersed in illicit activity and violence?
