Stemming The Tide

Prevention is generally thought to be the best solution to problems that confound and beset both individuals and societies. When it comes to introducing a subset of religious adherents with their cultural heritage intertwined with a religion that emphasizes the proselytizing element of its function in branching out to arrive at a conquest of numbers, drowning all other faiths in their sea of projected numerical supremacy and approaching that end with the use of violence, we find ourselves in a situation where the West's liberal democracy has been infiltrated by the near East's surrender to theistic totalitarianism.

Here and there throughout the world, from America to Indonesia, Spain to Britain, France to Canada, Australia to Argentina, Lebanon to Sudan, events occur to highlight a rapacious ideology intent on world conquest. So that when the West gathers its military resources to respond to violent provocations or to fears of overwhelming terrorism threatening to spread from East to West, that response garners the dreaded result of increasing the dedication of terrorists to their mass slaughters.

Since the Paris attacks, the West has been informed by security authorities that additional attacks are "highly likely" to occur. According to the chief of Britain's MI5, "We can't prevent (such attacks) 100%", a reality most observers have concluded on their own, based on the evidence that presents itself from time to time, when security operatives find their surveillance activities so onerous burdened by the sheer numbers of internal, let alone external, threats they can barely cope

Efforts to deter the rise of Islamist fundamentalism -- spurred by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through its funding of fanatic Wahhabi-style curricula at the Sunni madrasses that train future jihadis, and the Islamic Republic of Iran's revolutionary Shiite designing, funding and supporting its very own terrorist militias -- have failed. Leading to depressingly impressive gains made by self-styled "Caliphs" in establishing their caliphates in Iraq/Syria and Nigeria whose mujahadeen out-brutalize history's most feared killing hordes.

It is proving difficult to control the presence of radicalized Muslims eager to respond to the Islamic call to duty by the faithful in taking up arms in jihad against their enemies - encompassing all societies that spurn the invitation to surrender to Islam. A German intelligence estimate of the cost of monitoring the activities of one suspected jihadist comes in at a whopping 60 police officers on a 24/7 basis. So how to prevent attacks by those who are dedicated twofold; to creating mass slaughter, to committing themselves to martyrdom?

Instead of generously welcoming the raw material that may or may not respond to the call to jihad, perhaps it would be wiser to limit all new recruits within one's country by the simple expedient of severely cutting back the numbers encouraged to emigrate from their country of origin -- including refugees fleeing the violence their own governments impose upon them -- to Europe and North America whose values and cultures and laws the aggregate of Muslims seem to find inimical to their own Islamic values, cultures and laws.

Those who are incapable of adjusting their cultural background, their expectations and behaviours to match the welcoming culture's, and who instead, when their numbers give them the courage of entitlements, insist on the host country accommodating them in ways that other immigrants from other countries, other cultures, other religions would have no reasons to insist upon, managing to seamlessly retain what they value of their heritage, while integrating with those of their new country.

In so clearly demonstrating their inability, unwillingness, or 'right' to spurn integration into the prevailing culture, laws and social mores, they demonstrate their incapacity to adjust to the lifestyle that is practised and valued in the welcoming countries. A lesson hard learned, but not as hard as those countries finding themselves faced with large numbers of people for whom the indigenous culture is found offensive resulting in an internal situation of conflict and threat.
