Raising The Guard

"Our national security agencies monitor these kinds of threats."
"We're going to bring in additional tools to make it easier for our security agencies to monitor these kinds of threats and to charge and prosecute people when appropriate. We are going to move forward on those matters."
"We have an organization in the form of this Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, what we call ISIL, that is not only now present over a vast range of territory in both Iraq and Syria, flying its flag, (but is) openly promoting the concept of international jihad -- that is international terrorism -- against targets in this country."
"These threats are very, very real."
Prime Minister Stephen Harper

"Canadians can rely on their intelligence, on their law enforcement community ... to keep them safe. This being said, we have to remain vigilant because there is a threat."
"While we have airstrikes over there (in Iraq), we are keeping Canadians safe here."
Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney

North America has finally caught up with Europe. While Europe is anxious to catch up with North America in its economic outlook, it surpasses North America in the numbers of their nationals who are Muslim fanatics that have been departing their borders to travel to international sites where bedlam blooms and blood runs freely. There was a thought that Muslims in countries like France and England, and the Scandinavian countries were simply not integrating properly and struggling against discrimination.

And that, in contrast, Muslims who emigrated from their countries of origin to North America, in contrast, did meld into the receiving community, accepting its values and modifying the more unwelcome aspects of Islam that declare among other things that Sharia law and the worship of Islam must be recognized for its singular superiority over any man-made laws and secular rights guaranteeing freedoms not recognized in Islam.

Now, however, the incontrovertible truth rears its ugly head, that Muslims who subscribe to the purist Salafist version of Islam and those who bring with them the ancient grudges and antipathies current in the culture they left behind, and forgot not to take with them, haven't quite made the adjustment to the welcoming countries' values, nor the indigenous cultures and existing religious adherence. In a pluralist society that congratulates itself for its open-minded acceptance of the 'other', Muslims resent being regarded as the 'other' when it is in fact all others who occupy that unenviable status.

And so, the resulting recruitment of eager jihadists able and willing and eager to join the global jihad exists, and it exists wherever Muslim populations have integrated themselves in groups within societies alien to their entitlements to import and express and act on the more unsavoury customs of Islamic societies, from regarding women as chattel, to slandering and seeking to isolate Israel, from insisting that Sharia be regarded equally with state laws, and in short, demonstrating their inability and unwillingness to become an integrated part of a whole.

Now that European and North American jihadists have joined their futures with that of the Islamic State, and demonstrated that they are more than capable of grotesque atrocities committed against any they consider kuffar, non-Muslims, Jews and Infidels, it becomes a matter of great interest to identify them, to restrain them, to contain and sequester them to make the receiving society safe and secure from their intended depredations.

To that end, in countries of Europe which are finally awakening to the reality of what migration and refugee and immigrant acceptance has wrought from within the Muslim world, now enact self-protective laws, while the legal minds and the parliamentarians turn cart-wheels in their efforts to assure the Muslim collective that they are honoured and welcomed, even while suspicion and fear turns on those among them infused with malign purpose.

And here, finally, is where Canada, Australia and the United States begin to pick up the pieces to the puzzle that has distracted them in their efforts not to seem to be critical of a religion, any religion, because of the sensitivity of political niceties, unwilling to give offence where none is really intended. So the Canadian Prime Minister assures his public that the security authorities will be granted greater leeway in the protection of the public.

And the United States which like Canada has its security apparatus monitoring "hundreds of people" known to have travelled to fight jihad, learned the trade and returned, now seeks out a masked man with an English pronunciation may tie him to Canada. A man making pro-Islamic State announcements "intended to appeal to a western audience", as in recruitment. The guard, once let down, is now acutely drawn to attention.
