From The Horse's Mouth
"...I do not recall the Christians of the world rising to apologize for what Jim Jones did. Similarly, I refuse to apologize for what other sects do in the name of Islam. Quite simply, I neither believe what they believe, nor do I appreciate being included in a general categorization, grouping all sects together. This is an imam who doth protest too much. His argument is a specious one; those jihadists -- though he never names them as such, nor as fanatics, but he is skilled at equivocating, and so he trots out the names of multifarious sects within Islam that reflect either end of the spectrum, and everything between -- also represent Islam.
"Just as Christians are severed into countless sects and denominations, so are Muslims. In the same way that Catholics and Protestants differ and vary in some fundamental beliefs, so we shall find among the Muslims of the world."
Mohamad Jebara, chief Imam, resident scholar, Cordova Spiritual Education Centere, Ottawa
Quite aside from those who are ultra orthodox like the Salafis and theWahhabis and those who are moderate and reasonable, like the Ismailis.
He fails to dwell on the fact that the Wahhabists invariably tend to consider the Ismailis heretics, and under ultraconservative Islam, they are considered a disgrace to Islam, and death is recommended as an antidote to the dreadful sickness they are perceived to harbour deep within their souls because purportedly their faith in Islam is abhorrent to Allah.
It is not among them that polls indicate a high percentage have tolerance for violent jihad.
He also manages to evade any mention head-on in his diatribe about how unfair the Western, non-Muslim view of disordered Islamism is, based on what we observe is happening in the world of Islam, wherever it happens to be geographically. It is inferred as an outrage, omitting that word Islamophobia". Simply that there is no need for those like himself to apologize.
Nor does he address the damage done to Islam, insulting to the faithful and to this world faith, that the vicious assaults being carried out through bloody slaughter by jihadis conscripted to the greater glory of persuading Infidels and the Kuffar that they would do well to turn to Islam in complete surrender, have created a cult of death.
The glory of personal death resulting in honourable martyrdom and a place in Heaven beside the Almighty, with a horde of virgins clamouring to do service to the hero, and the delivery of death to those deemed unworthy to continue living because they represent a rejection of Islam. The point being that there is a certain universality about the resurgence of militarized Islam. It has raised its violent hand eschewing the scimitar for the AK47, across the Globe.
Slaughtering the insufficiently faithful Muslim and the Crusaders and Jews alike in its passion for death and its vision of a global Caliphate. The anger and rage of those like Mohamad Jebara railing against the unjustness of it all, is misdirected. That anger and rage should be focused on those of his faith -- irrespective of sect -- who take their inspiration from the same source, the Koran, performing a grave disservice to that faith. Rage against the despoilers of Islam, please do.
It is the religion that is sacred to him and all the others who consider themselves moderates and reasonable human beings that is being intolerably blasphemed against, if the basic tenets the world is assured have the greatest meaning to Islam are to be believed; peace and brotherhood. Respond not by chastising the non-Muslim world that reacts with horror to that cult of conquest and death, but by condemning the death-deliverers within the faith.
Take inspiration, for example, from another Toronto-based Islamic group. Look at the "United Against Terror" rally that took place on Thursday as the manner in which to move forward. Speak with Hassan Abdillahi speaking for Somali-Canadians who stated:
"We cannot be silent and go without making condemnation. It's the first time for the community to make this kind of effort, so it's a good thing. It's to help the community and get together in solidarity and condemn all the terror acts - and everywhere, actually, not only for Kenya".Amen.
