A Palestinian lawmaker known as the "mother of martyrs", who celebrated
her sons' attacks on Israelis has died, according to Palestinian
authorities.
Lawmaker Mariam Farhat died today (Sunday) in a Gazan hospital due to health complications including lung ailments and kidney failure, according to health official Ashraf Al-Kidra.
Farhat, who was 64, was a member of the Palestinian Change and Reform Parliamentary bloc, which has substantial links with Hamas.
The controversial Palestinian figure was the mother of three men who died during terrorist activities against the state of Israel. She shot to notoriety in 2002 when she recorded a farewell video with her 17-year-old son, Mohammed, giving him her blessing the night before a terrorist attack in a Jewish settlement. Mohammed killed five seminary students before he was shot dead by soldier.
Farhat said of the incident: “One of the best days of my life was when Mohammad [her son] possessed a weapon and brought it to me to make me happy.”
She leaves behind another son in an Israeli prison.
An estimated 4,000 Palestinians attended her funeral, including Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh
