Educational System of Values
Canadian school boards and their elected trustees have turned their vision and their interest and their activism to peculiar directions. The Ottawa Board of Education this summer decided it would 'support' gay students within the school system by being present and openly supportive of gay rights through official attendance at the city's Gay Pride Parade.
Interesting, and very inclusive, but really, why? Certainly it made some within the school board, including those who attended, with yellow school bus included, feel good about themselves. But is that gesture really geared to helping confused kids understand their alter gender feelings? It may put a stamp of support on gay activities as being only marginally different than that of straights; does it?
But on to the Toronto School Board. Which has all of its students acquire through their parents doling out $10-a-pop for student planners, buying in to other social issues, on behalf of their students; guiding them, and imprinting values upon them, as it were. Jaak Purres, a Toronto resident, flipping through his 6-year-old son's planner was confronted with an oddity.
Calendar days in the planner marking "Days of Significance". And those days? Well, International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers, International Day of Zero-Tolerance on Female Genital Cutting/Mutilation, and Palestinian Solidarity. The Toronto School Board is dead set on politicizing its students. Not satisfied with socializing them, it has expanded its moral authority to politicizing them as well.
This will please/displease sex workers, ditto for those whose abhorrent cultural practices include infibulation, and the same for Arabs, Muslims, Jews. What makes the trustees on the Toronto Board of Education feel it is their duty to inspire, direct, coach, submit and teach children beyond geography, history, art, language, science, mathematics and physical education?
In the third category/subject mentioned might it also be feasible to devote a time-frame to explicating the existential trauma of Israelis? It might be called Jewish Right To Existence As A Legitimate State, and it could include instruction on the efficacy of suicide bombing targeting civilians and schoolchildren...?
The province under the Liberal McGuinty regime thought it would be a fine idea to update sex health education in the curriculum, teaching kids from Grade 3 up about homosexuality; Grade 6 about masturbation. The public became rather annoyed, and stirred up a commotion, so the affable McGuinty back-tracked for the nonce.
The student calendar makes note of the various religions and cultures redolent of our multicultural society, and that's nice and inclusive. It would also be an interesting exercise if they refrained from structuring children's education to include the three topics mentioned above, which are political, ideological and problematical in their details.
Surely something should be left to parents to be responsible for in patterning their children's system of values?
