"Gay Icon"

So what do Ann Coulter's detractors fall back on now? Well, they'll claim she's deranged, doesn't know her "right" from her "left". And GOProud has gained the kind of publicity they appreciate through her having agreed to join their Advisory Council as honorary chair. She's had practise, having been their keynote speaker in 2010 at a fund-raising event.

According to the neat categories in which peoples' public stances and statements are placed, she should be the gay communities' worst nightmare as a woman of sound mind who is highly intelligent, capable of bringing stinging irony to a discussion, defusing and alternately infusing situations for further, often hysterical discussion/denunciation. But she's intellectually incisive and balanced, also.

Those 'right-left' categories clearly do not take into account the fact that bright people with presence and presence of mind are far more nuanced and complex than merely parroting anticipated positions on social and political issues that their easy categorization might allow. Right-wing, left-wing and never the twain shall meet nor agree. Well, wrong, wrong.

"If you're born gay, why would you be liberal? ... Gays are a demographic group with one of the highest incomes in America, they are victims of crime. [Muslim fundamentalists] don't think too highly of them ... Abortion isn't at the top of [the gay] list, I'm guessing. And, by the way, as soon as liberals find a gay gene, guess who's going to get aborted?"

That cuts to the chase, doesn't it?

And guess what, there are a lot of gays who would prefer to behave like any other member of society, their gender preferences being no one's business but their own. Normalization of social attitudes and benefits toward the gay community, despite resistance from some quarters, has given a sense of ease to the entire community.

Which has, ironically, resulted in gays whose attitudes have become offensive from defensive, practising their propensity to act out in juvenile declarations of their entitlements, gay marriage being one of them, annual picturesquely colourful and blatantly socially offensive Gay Pride parades being another manifestation of sticking it to the presumed homophobes still blemishing society.
"I am honoured to serve in this capacity on GOProud's Advisory Council, and look forward to being the Queen of Fabulous."
But fellas, accept that though she is fully in concord with the legitimacy and rights to be accorded to gays and lesbians, transgendered, etc., she is not connected to accepting that urge to upend societal norms with the absurdity of gay marriage, when laws and customs have been already been altered for gay inclusivity and equality of social benefits.
"...all those angry gays causing trouble for everybody. I don't even think they were born gay. I think they just are angry at their fathers..."
Could be, could be. Or their mothers. Or just the whole, wide world. Or they miss the intransigence of an earlier society that denied them their civil and human rights, made them miserable, violated and scorned them, keeping them fearfully underground. They might try bringing Gay Pride to Tehran or Riyadh or Cairo.

They might try to put a cap on their rage, and accept that it is entirely reasonable that normal people who are supportive of their rights are not homophobic when they reject the legitimacy and the 'need' for gay marriage, along with the 'need' for publicly-displayed episodes of graphic sexual encounters by uncouth, unclad celebrants during Gay Pride parade events.
