The Beleaguered RCMP
How about those Mounties? They've so long enjoyed special admiration and status within Canada, and for a long time the international community was aware of this country's national police force, viewing them as did Canadians themselves, with great admiration. For the RCMP has long been a highly professional policing and security force on the federal scene, with a time-honoured heritage of law enforcement.
Because the Mounties "always got their man".
Lately, however, there have been so many scandals involving the Mounties, from clumsy administration to seemingly poor training of recruits and lack of support leading to incidents where Mounties have found themselves outgunned, that their reputation has suffered enormously. And here and there pop up little items recounting how individual members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have disgraced themselves.
From a former Mountie, released from active duties but still receiving regular pay, murdering an on-duty Ottawa policeman who just happened to be sitting in his police car, in downtown Ottawa before going off duty for the night, to a group of Mounties being taken by surprise by an area drug dealer and four RCMP officers tragically shot dead in Mayerthorpe, Alberta.
Now comes news that an RCMP Constable in Langley, B.C., had his BlackBerry and wallet stolen by a prostitute whom he had engaged to give him oral sex in his RCMP vehicle. A raid on a drug house recovered his wallet and RCMP I.D., but the BlackBerry was not recovered. Senior RCMP decided to penalize the officer by docking him five days' pay.
And then there's the RCMP officer on Vancouver Island who, while off duty, decided to leave a police dog in his locked SUV for three hours in 30C temperatures while he went off fishing. Marina staff called 911, on seeing the plight of the dog, and covered the vehicle with a tarp, spraying it with cold water.
Wonder if spraying plenty of cold water over these half-wits in uniform would be at all useful?
