The One and thank heavens Only
The puzzle is that Pierre Elliott Trudeau was a Liberal Prime Minister of Canada. From the political manifestos that he wrote before entering federal politics, to the accommodations he made with socialist/communist regimes in his vast admiration for their humane ideologies surely solving all the ills of the world, he would far more comfortably, one might logically assume, have fit into the NDP file, becoming Canada's first socialist prime minister. On the other hand, with his much-vaunted intelligence, he would have been aware that under the New Democratic Party banner his chances to assume the prime ministership of Canada would have been considerably reduced. And ascending to that lofty aerie was certainly of primary importance to the man. Therein lies the answer to the conundrum. It is called political expediency; he simply, by force of personality, altered the parameters of the Liberal ideology to accommodate his socialist mindset.
And Canada was the beneficiary. Under the rule of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Canada recognized the vile nature of the United States, a behemoth of gargantuan appetite prepared to swallow Canada whole without PET there to protect Canadian soil and natural resources, let alone the cowering, frightened populace, aware they were mice sleeping in a narrow bed unaccommodatingly close to an elephant. PET was most content to piss on the Americans' rug.
But he was inordinately respectful to that great experiment in modelling human nature to a protocol in socialist structure that in its scope and expectations strove to re-engineer what nature had devised for the human race. Harmony and wholesome togetherness in striving to build a cooperative beehive where workers would energetically produce with complete altruism, asking nothing for themselves but existence, profiting a queen bee's destiny.
The prevailing order developed over aeons from ancient, primitive times to the present, where individual challenges were met by individual capabilities and interests to produce a world of industry and commerce, trade and exploitation of natural resources to profit an economy that presented a way of life through cultures that extolled health and education and opportunities for all, came complete with damning inequalities.
The man with the golden spoon dangling from his peripatetic mouth, visiting the vast experiments in China, the USSR, and little Cuba, chose forced labour and absence of personal rewards for all but the Politburo for he was of their ilk and he empathized completely with the peace and popularity of their movement, nudging humankind toward their ultimate anthill destiny.
