Granting Asylum

It's really kind of difficult to appreciate that our Minister of Immigration, Jason Kenney, a wonderful advocate for emigrants and their needs, committed to ensuring that those who deserve to be admitted to Canada have the opportunity, while those who obviously represent candidates unsuitable for admission will be refused, has taken on the situation of European Roma in such a negative manner.

That Roma have traditionally been the subject of dreadful discrimination is a fact of history. That they continue to be discriminated against in their places of residence in Europe, has been well enough documented, as well. Roma, to be sure, have a somewhat chequered reputation. Many of them, clearly outside the protection of the law where they live, have long developed a casual disregard for the laws that fail them.

The Roma in Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic suffer discrimination in all areas of life, and their children are beaten at school even while their teachers affect disinterest in their plight. Roma women may not venture out at night for fear of attack. Anti-Roma graffiti advocating violence and worst against them is commonly seen. Roma suffer discrimination in housing and employment opportunities.

The rise of Neo-Nazi groups as well has led to growing incidences of violence aimed at Roma communities. Discrimination is so prevalent in Europe that their situation is indeed dire. And they are in need of haven somewhere. Which is why so many have turned to making application for refugee status in Canada.

There were so many asylum seekers among Czech Roma that Jason Kenney referred to their claims as 'bogus'. True, it is difficult to believe that civilized European countries, well advanced into the 21st Century would continue to retain such affectively miserable ethnic-geared and -oriented discriminatory assaults that they become institutionalized.

But the fact seems to be that Roma live under dreadful societal hardship in Europe. Despite which many of their claims are rejected by the Immigration and Refugee Board as having no basis in fact. Which represents as a troubling and peculiar misunderstanding on the part of a country that prides itself on fair judgement as a haven for many of the world's disadvantaged.
