Honour Intact

Will no one (be able to) rid us (Canada) of this dreadful family? Citizenship is held to be sacrosanct and bears with it all the benefits that accrue to citizens of Canada, inclusive of all the rights guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But why must this rights-guarantee be honoured when and if the very citizens who benefit from it, spurn it and make every effort to destroy it?

Ah well, because the Supreme Court of Canada insists that it will not succumb to the same kind of uncivil behaviour as those who seek to destroy our freedoms and our rights. We must, perforce, be noble and overlook their atrocious plots to produce slaughter on a grand scale, to prove their point. Which is that Islam is more powerful than all the governments in the world with their ideas of liberty and justice.

We must not, under any circumstances, descend to a reflection of their values and demeanours. They may prefer to achieve martyrdom over life for themselves, and prefer vicious atrocities committed against citizens of the West and indeed their own insufficiently-fanatical religious brethren, but we must not become the vehicle, in seeking to punish them, of descending to their level.

To which a reasonable soul can only groan and whisper: "and why ever not?"

For the simple fact is that Islamist jihadists know very well how our justice system is contrived, and how we honour it, for its fairness and justness, meted out equally to all, the undeserving as well as the deserving, for we are all one under the law. Their skewed values find this quite amusing, since they are more than capable of manipulating us to suit their agenda, calling upon justice to be served for them, while they spurn it for others.

Their own honour is involved with responding to the universal Islamic call for all pious Muslims to rise to the challenge that the West has presumably raised toward Islam. Islamists convince their faithful that Islam is under fire from "Islamophobia", a condition of suspicion that they have themselves brought to the fore as a result of their ongoing violent attacks in support of jihad.

And their recruits line up happily to surrender themselves to the will of Allah as prescribed by the thundering clerics demanding dedication to the task at hand. The debilitation of the West, to achieve the supremacy of Islam. All of these evident details are as nothing to those who practise law to the nth degree. Those who declare:

"We must adhere to our democratic and legal values, even if that adherence serves in the short term to benefit those who oppose and seek to destroy those values. For if we do not, in the longer term, the enemies of democracy and the rule of law will have succeeded. They will have demonstrated that our faith in our legal order is unable to withstand their threats."

Humbug reasoning. Reeking with nobility. It has the clarity of observance of the law, and the fumbling stupidity of those envisioning themselves as possessing superior reasoning abilities. In the end, through Supreme Court decisions of this calibre, effectively undermining the decision of the Government of Canada to accede to the request of the Government of the United States to extradite a suspected al-Qaeda collaborator.

And Abdullah Khadr may remain unhindered and safe from prosecution, as a citizen of Canada, in this country. Ready and able to welcome back his renowned brother, Omar, upon his release into Canadian custody. To join his mother and his sister, who spit venomous hatred of Canadian values but who don't particularly mind availing themselves of Canada's generous social benefits.
