Most Trusted, Most Votes
Well my, that is an interesting revelation. And under the circumstances, a welcome one. That there are enough Canadian voters who are singularly unimpressed by the hot air being vented continually by Michael Ignatieff and his cohorts in the Liberal Party, along with the NDP, the Green Party, and the rather pathetically-self-obsessed Bloc Quebec to haul the Conservatives from power in Parliament.
Insufficient voters are impressed with the presentation of Michael Ignatieff as a potential future Prime Minister of Canada. They appear to be rather satisfied with the performance of the current prime minister, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper. Perhaps they believe that Prime Minister Harper is honourable in intent and practise and Mr. Ignatieff is not, measurably.
Whatever the reason, Prime Minister Harper's ongoing performance has the support of a significant portion of the electorate. Voters, in a recent poll conducted for Global National and Postmedia News by Ipsos Reid, indicate unequivocally that they believe the Conservatives are in the best position to continue leading the country. And that the incumbent prime minister is their choice for that office.
The poll offered Canadians two choices to determine what they believe is the most important election issue. Fully 63% claimed that "electing a party and leader that will provide honest, open and trustworthy government" trumps "electing a party and leader that will make sure that our economic recovery continues", which was chosen by 37% of those polled. But on both counts Stephen Harper and the Conservatives had the upper hand.
The irony here of course is that the Liberals, the NDP, the Greens and the Bloc all contend that the current Conservative-led government is untrustworthy and dishonest. Obviously a contention not shared by the electorate who have witnessed the quality of performance of this government and found it greatly to their liking.
As for the country's economic situation, 37% believe the Conservatives are more capable of performing well at "making sure our economic recovery continues". There is a track record, after all, where Canadians have observed this government at work. And when it comes to keeping taxation tolerable, 36% believe that the Conservatives can be trusted to "keep taxes under control".
How utterly inconvenient for the opposition.
